Historical figures have featured in Inspector Spacetime since its beginning, although its portrayal of them has varied widely in terms of accuracy. Since the programme was conceived as serious family "edutainment", the stories set in the past were originally supposed to teach children history, with the Inspector solving historical crimes, such as the theft of Ferdinand Magellan's rowboats in Guam the first season. The science fiction elements, however, proved more popular and immediately began to define the programme. Although purely historical stories have been largely discontinued, the writers enjoy occasionally introducing surreptitious cameos of actual personages from the past to keep viewers on their toes.
